Noise-induced hearing loss is preventable. Learn about safe listening practices and how to protect your hearing in everyday life and work environments.
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) occurs when the delicate hair cells in the inner ear are damaged by exposure to loud sounds. Unlike some other types of hearing loss, NIHL is entirely preventable. Once damage occurs, however, it is typically permanent.
Sounds above 85 decibels (dB) can cause hearing damage with prolonged exposure. Common sources of potentially harmful noise include concerts and music events, power tools, heavy machinery, firearms, personal audio devices at high volume, and noisy recreational activities.
Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent but entirely preventable with proper hearing protection and safe listening habits.
Practical steps to protect your hearing include: using ear protection (earplugs or earmuffs) in noisy environments, following the 60/60 rule for headphones (no more than 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes at a time), taking regular breaks from noise exposure, maintaining distance from loud sound sources, and having your hearing checked regularly if you are frequently exposed to noise.
Parents should also be aware of noise exposure in children, who may be particularly vulnerable to noise damage from toys, music, and recreational activities.
If you work in a noisy environment or have concerns about noise exposure, a baseline hearing test can help monitor your hearing health over time. At Saanvi Speech and Hearing Care, we provide hearing assessments and guidance on hearing conservation for individuals at risk of noise-induced hearing loss.
