The Importance of Newborn Hearing Screening

By Saanvi Speech and Hearing Care • 7th August 2026

Newborn hearing screening is a simple, painless test that can identify hearing loss early. Learn why early detection matters and what happens after screening.

Newborn hearing screening is designed to identify babies who may have hearing loss as early as possible. The test is quick, painless, and can be performed while the baby is sleeping. It typically uses one of two methods: Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) or Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR).

Approximately 1 to 3 out of every 1000 babies are born with some degree of hearing loss. Without screening, hearing loss may not be noticed until the child is 2 or 3 years old, by which time important language development opportunities may have been missed.

Early identification of hearing loss allows for timely intervention during the critical period of language development.

If a baby does not pass the initial hearing screening, it does not necessarily mean they have permanent hearing loss. A follow-up diagnostic evaluation is recommended to confirm the results. Many babies who are referred for further testing are found to have normal hearing.

For those babies who are confirmed to have hearing loss, early intervention services including audiological management, hearing technology, and speech-language therapy can be initiated promptly to support communication development.

At Saanvi Speech and Hearing Care, we provide hearing assessments for infants and young children using age-appropriate techniques. If your baby did not receive a hearing screening at birth, or if you have concerns about your child's hearing at any age, we can help with evaluation and guidance.
