Voice Disorders: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

By Saanvi Speech and Hearing Care • 12th August 2026

Voice problems can affect anyone — from teachers and singers to children. Learn about common voice disorders, their causes, and how voice therapy can help.

A voice disorder occurs when the quality, pitch, or loudness of the voice differs from what is expected for a person's age, gender, and cultural background. Common symptoms include persistent hoarseness, breathiness, vocal fatigue, loss of vocal range, throat pain while speaking, or a feeling of strain when using the voice.

Voice disorders can result from various causes including vocal misuse or overuse, vocal nodules or polyps, acid reflux, neurological conditions, or structural changes in the larynx. Some professions that require extensive voice use — such as teachers, call centre workers, and singers — are at higher risk.

Persistent hoarseness lasting more than two weeks should be evaluated by a professional.

Diagnosis of a voice disorder typically involves a case history, perceptual voice assessment, and may include instrumental examination of the vocal folds by an ENT specialist. Understanding the cause of the voice problem is essential for planning appropriate treatment.

Voice therapy focuses on improving vocal hygiene, reducing harmful vocal behaviours, and training healthier voice production techniques. For many voice disorders, therapy alone can lead to significant improvement without the need for surgical intervention.

At Saanvi Speech and Hearing Care, we provide voice assessment and therapy for children and adults experiencing voice difficulties. If you have been experiencing hoarseness or voice changes for more than two weeks, a professional evaluation is recommended.
