Speech Therapy for Adults After Stroke

A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted. Depending on which area of the brain is affected, a stroke can result in various communication difficulties. Aphasia is a common condition following stroke that affects the ability to speak, understand language, read, or write.

Other communication difficulties after stroke may include dysarthria (difficulty controlling the muscles used for speech), apraxia of speech (difficulty planning and coordinating speech movements), or cognitive-communication problems affecting attention, memory, and problem-solving.

Speech-language therapy after stroke focuses on restoring as much communication ability as possible, developing compensatory strategies, and supporting the person and their family in adapting to changes. Therapy is individualized based on the type and severity of the communication difficulty.

Recovery varies from person to person and depends on factors such as the location and extent of the stroke, the person's overall health, and the intensity and timing of rehabilitation. Many people continue to show improvement over months and even years following a stroke.
